(born January 20th 1961 in Frankfurt am Main)

Professor of “History and presence of Pre-modern Europe“. Studied History and Latin at the Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main, state examination 1986, PhD 1991 (on Europe and the foreigners. The Mongols judged by the Occident from 13th to 15th c., publ. in German); Habilitation 2000 (on Frankfurt am Main in the Middle Ages).

1987 to 2004 lecturer at the Historical Seminar at the University of Frankfurt am Main; teaching at the Universities of Konstanz, Gießen and Prague; since 1995 recurrent visiting Professor at the Department for Medieval Studies/ Central European University, Budapest.

Grants/ visiting scholarships/ fellowships German Historical Institute Rome (1990), Historisches Kolleg Munich (1998/ 99), IAS Jerusalem (2001), Waseda-University Tokyo (2005), École pratique des Hautes Études Paris (2007), Collegium Budapest Institute for Advanced Study (2008/ 09), International Consortium for Research in the Humanities "Fate, Freedom, and Prognostication", Erlangen (2013), Stockholms universitet, Historiska institutionen: Research Award Riksbankens Jubileumsfonds (2018/19).

Member of Historisches Kolleg München , Frankfurter Historische Kommission , Historische Kommission für Westfalen  and of the board of the "Institut für vergleichende Städtegeschichte"  at Münster/ Westfalen. Chair of the board for the Weiterbildungs-Fernstudiengang „Historische Stadt“ (since 2009). Member of the executive board of CARMEN: The Worldwide Medieval Network , of the Editorial Board of "Dies Nova"  and of "Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies". Permanent delegate of the faculty KSW (FernUniversität) in the Philosophische Fakultätentag and its treasurer since 2012. – Internat. evaluating service for universities/ academies/ academic research programs in Belgium, Denmark, EU, Finnland, UK, Ireland, Austria, Rumania, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, USA.

Since December 2004 Professor of History and Presence of Pre-modern Europe at the University of Hagen.
